The Cheapest AND the Most Stable EFB / ADS-B Solution

Its ready folks! This is the cheapest navigation solution with ADS-B to date.  It provides pretty much anything you could realistically need in the air.

One time cost of $75, and no recurring fees. This includes hardware.

The solution is based on the most popular Android EFB app. Avare. ADS-B is provided by Mike's ADS-B app. based on RTL dongle. Mike has successfully decoded UAT on the dongle which completes the solution with ground based weather and traffic.

So what can you expect from this solution? Anything iPad/ForeFlight and Stratus provides. I admit that the hardware is not as shiny and slick as the Apple hardware, but that is a cosmetic issue.

A comparable solution of ForeFlight/iPad, and Stratus is $1200 for hardware, and $175 annual fee for software.

Here is the cost break down for this solution:

Hardware
Tablet ($55)
Dongle and Antenna ($12)
USB OTG Cable ($5)

Software
Avare (Free)
HIZ ADS-B ($3)

This is how you can assemble the solution:

Buy all the above, download the software, connect everything up as shown in the picture, and take it up in the air.

The picture is taken in my house, and even inside, you can see several aircrafts.

Some argue that flying is not cheap so why bother? Depends on who you ask, an executive, or a student on loan.

One final note: ALL hand held solutions (Android or iOS) are not certified for use in IFR flights.

  1. If you read the description of the HIZ ADS-B software (ADSB Receiver Pro), it states: "This app enables your device to display live ADSB data (1090ES) from surrounding airborne aircraft."

1090ES is TIS-B traffic only. ADS-B weather is broadcast on 978. You might want to clarify this in your description as one would think this also brings in FIS-B (weather).

    1. Sign up for beta testing by contacting HIZ LLC or check apps4av forum. Yes you will get everything including nexrad, metar, taf, winds etc. The app on store only shows traffic, but beta app shows everything.

    1. You can buy the dongle and the USB OTG cable only, and try with your existing tablet. It may not work because some tablets do not allow USB data connection.

  3. After purchasing the Dragon Touch M7 tablet I have found that the GPS is not satellite driven. I feel like I just wasted +$60.

    1. If you don't like the tablet get a Samsung for 50 more and return M7. Amazon shipping and returns are free. I don't get any money from these proceeds.

    2. Oh, sorry if my tone conveyed anything other than the great respect I have for you and your efforts! It never entered my mind for even a second that you would have an ulterior motive.

My statement was targeted at the blatant false advertising on the Amazon website that says the tablet has GPS. Here's a quote from the product description:

Dragon Touch M7 7 inch Quad Core IPS Tablet PC, Google Android 4.4 KitKat, 1GB RAM, 8GB Nand Flash, 7" 178 Degree View IPS 1024x600 HD Display, Built-in Bluetooth 4.0, Dual HD Camera, GPS...

So yea, I'm dismayed that I have purchased a tablet for the sole purpose of flying around with it tracking me and traffic on a moving map only to discover it could only determine where I am when I'm at home connected to the internet.

On the bright side, it was great to get a device with zero bloatware out of the box. Kudos to Tablet Express for that!

    3. Ed, I have satellite locations showing in the tools of Avare on this tablet. But the GPS is weak. Are you sure it is WIFI based? And how do you know? Thanks.

    4. At the bottom of the support page for the tablet is an FAQ. See question 5.
      http://www.tabletexpress.com/support/index/download/906

Q5 What kind of GPS it has? Is it like satellite GPS?

(answer): GPS function of this Dragon Touch M7 is not satellite. You need to download a map and get it work with internet after you enable ‘location’ in Setting or top sliding down menu. You can also download some offline map to get it work.

  4. The Dongle and Antenna is currently unavailable from Amazon. I think I found the same thing on Ebay for $6.77 from Hong Kong: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB2-0-Digital-DVB-T-SDR-DAB-FM-HDTV-TV-Tuner-Receiver-Stick-RTL2832U-R820T2-FC0-/221921993931?hash=item33ab94e4cb:g:Vj4AAOSwA4dWK46j I ordered one. When I get it, I will post my experience with it.
